Open, Sesame! – was a magical phrase in the story of “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” in One Thousand and One Nights. It would open the door to a great hidden treasure. This treasure now waits for you in the newly refurbished Restaurant Sesame, Dubrovnik’s most beautiful secret gem. Come and see what fantastic charm this place holds, ready to seduce you with its unique setting.
Restaurant Sesame follows the family tradition from 1880 and is located in a quaint green oasis just a couple of minutes away from the Old town, in the street leading towards Gradac park and Danče beach, favorite local spots. The street is named after the great Italian poet Dante, and if you look closely, you will see his bust near the entrance to Sesame. The restaurant is a part of a two-hundred year old stone house, surrounded by lush greenery of orange and pittosporum trees.
Every little detail inside Sesame tells the story of Dubrovnik; its rich history is simply a part of Sesame’s own identity. A careful observer will undoubtedly notice old black and white photos of Dubrovnik, with its old tram from the 20 th century. There are other curiosities, like the little owl figurines, symbols of wisdom, scattered throughout the restaurant. Sesame is steeped in something mystical and mysterious, so we invite you to discover it…
Here at Sesame, we leave nothing to chance. Our head chef, Marina Žibert, a proud holder of the French Cordon Bleu culinary academy certificate, prepares dishes that are an ideal combination of Croatian and Mediterranean cuisine with a little scent of French cuisine, employing the sous-vide method of preparing vegetables, carefully timing the cooking to preserve flavors and vitamins.
While creating our menu, we were led by a very important thing to us: the wish to offer you the best ingredients, like the highest quality of fresh local-grown organic vegetables. Most of our products are supplied by proven organic stores (flour, spices, beans, chocolate etc.). Our lamb is from the Dalmatian mountain of Velebit, where the wind brings up the sea salt, which adds this special flavor to the meat. We bake our own three types of bread, hand-make our own pasta in many forms and make all desserts fresh in-house, courtesy of our pastry chef, Lucija Tomašić, whose sweet creations we’re especially proud of.
Of the cold appetizers, try the lobster and shrimp salad, beef tartare, beef carpaccio with truffles, wild sea bream and langoustine with celery and fennel sauce or perhaps the fish carpaccio with caviar and potato puree. Featured hot appetizers include risottos and home- made ravioli with goat cheese, rucola and swiss chard or those with ox tail meat as well as the scallop with smoked ham and arugula sauce. You will be delighted by our vegetable soup with quail eggs or the spicy gazpacho, but that’s not nearly all…
The main courses include the slow-baked lamb with seasonal vegetables, the succulent beefsteak with truffles or the trio of lamb shoulder, loin and ribs with pea puree. The fish specialties include the sea bass fillet with vanilla and fennel sauce, tuna tartar, confit and baked with seasonal vegetables, salmon fillet with lobster sauce and wild sea bream fillet with wild herbs and langoustine dashi.
You can enjoy all this stunning food sitting on the outside terrace enjoying the breeze and the green backdrop of orange trees or in the inside seating area, accompanied by the sounds of the piano and the sensation of impassable pleasure, as time seems to stand still here at the magical Sesame…
